Do you suffer from SOS – Shiny Object Syndrome. Are you distracted by too many ideas? The latest, greatest fad in social media? Finding yourself going off in many directions and never finishing anything?
This loss of focus is costing you time and money. It’s costing you hundreds of hours a year in productivity and hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars a year in revenue.
You have a new idea…
You hear about a new social media platform…
You hear about someone having success with a marketing tactic…
You see someone’s new website and begin making changes to your own…
You get excited and have energy and passion and enthusiasm because you’re starting something new.
Ever get a blog started but then abandon it after a year because video works better?
Ever start a series of videos then abandon them because ebooks work better?
Ever start a new Facebook ad campaign and abandon it after 10 days because someone told you that story ads work better than images?
Ever join a network marketing company … then abandon it for another because the product looks so cool?
Then do it again? And again? And again?
Of course what happens is simple: everything gets started, but nothing gets finished. In addition, countless hours and dollars are wasted in pursuit of the new, shiny object without having thought through whether this new item, technique, service or product is “right” for your business.
I know it’s hard not to get excited about every new idea that comes past you. Some of them are very, very cool. But you are running a business and you must stop and ask yourself:
- Is this right for my business?
- Do my customers want this and are they willing to pay for it?
- Do I have the time, resources, energy, and money to put into this to make it successful?
- Do I have too many open projects sitting on my desk that need to be finished before I begin something new?
- Do I have the ability to finish this new project, plus implement and maintain it?
- What has to drop off my radar in order for me to start something new?
Ask these questions every single time something new catches your attention and you feel the need to run in a new direction. Soon, you will find yourself staying focused on what you’re doing, finishing what you’ve started and seeing results and success because you’ve stayed the course.
