Too Old To Start A Business?

Why would you think you're too old?

The internet is the perfect place for those of us older than 45 to start a business.

If you can learn something new and follow directions, I'm not seeing age as a problem.

The start up costs are very small when compared to purchasing an existing franchise or starting from scratch with a brick and mortar store.

The maintenance of the business requires some time, but little money when considering your overhead can be limited to a few basic tools and user fees. Truly, have a laptop or computer and an internet connection and you're set.

Ongoing online marketing costs are the same for either business. Though a brick and mortar often requires more than just online marketing so printing costs will need to be figured into the budget.

Why would you think you're too old?

Could it be because you're afraid?

  • Of learning something new?
  • Of not knowing enough?
  • Of not understanding what it means to own an internet business?
  • Of thinking it's too risky?

First, the learning something new at any age is the same: you take it in small steps, learning as you go.

Second, if you think that right now you don't know enough you're in the same boat as everyone else. The way to market online changes on a regular basis, but the basics stay the same. Learn the basics and you're ready to go.

Third, what it means to own an internet business: it is different than owning a store on Main St. America. The way we handle transactions is different. Cold, hard cash isn't used online. But secure payment processing is. Communication is different. Meeting face-to-face and settling things with a handshake are often impossible because we're doing business with people from different countries. But, video conferencing is a good thing. Skype and Google+ Hangouts or Google Chat are just three options for having face-to-face conversations with customers.

Fourth, honestly…the world today is changing. Quickly. Having been online since 1995, owning an online business since 2008, I can unequivocally state this:

“The biggest risk, today, is not taking any risk. In a world that's changing this quickly, you cannot sit still…you will go backwards. Hence, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is the one that says to not take any risks.”
