Reading is Fundamental

It's fundamental to my personal and professional growth.

I love to read. I was reading before 1st grade and would read anything that's put in front of me. The back of a cereal box at breakfast, an instruction manual, the dictionary or thesaurus. Fiction and non-fiction alike, if it's printed text I would read it.

I'm not much different today. I do have a Kindle and truly love that I can borrow books from my local library through it. And, my book shelves aren't quite as full and overflowing as they used to be…because of an agreement my husband and I came to a few years ago. Between the Kindle and my agreement with the husband, my book inventory is down to the couple of hundred now. And, it's a good mix of fiction and non-fiction.

Today, in fiction, I'm reading Micro: A Novel by Michael Crichton, Richard Preston

It's quite fun, actually. From the Amazon.com page:

In the vein of Jurassic Park, this high-concept thriller follows a group of graduate students lured to Hawaii to work for a mysterious biotech company—only to find themselves cast out into the rain forest, with nothing but their scientific expertise and wits to protect them. An instant classic,Micro pits nature against technology in vintage Crichton fashion. Completed by visionary science writer Richard Preston, this boundary-pushing thriller melds scientific fact with pulse-pounding fiction to create yet another masterpiece of sophisticated, cutting-edge entertainment.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through and enjoying the story. Bad guys + good guys + technology used for nefarious purposes = a good plot. Then add good character development and a bit of environmental education. It reminds me of the movies “InnerSpace”, “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and “Fantastic Voyage”. It's fun, ignites my imagination and is a way to break away from thinking too hard and too much about growing my business, working with clients and getting too serious during the day.

As for non-fiction…I am reading The Motivation Manifesto by Brendon Burchard for my morning read. It's a great way to begin the day.

It really is a focus on claiming my personal power…something that gets forgotten or lost along the way of my building a business and working with clients. It's also something that seems to be most prevalent with women. I'm sure it has something to do with society, culture and in general the messages that we women read and hear everyday. Then again, it could be just me. Either way, I'm finding it to be an excellent source for guiding my thoughts and my mind in the direction of being successful for the day.

What are you reading? Do you have a favorite book you'd like to recommend?
