Suck It Up Buttercup

The minute you complain is the minute you absolve yourself of all responsibility – making it easy for you to blame someone else for your current situation.

Listen, things happen. Completely out of your control. Sometimes really bad things.

I get it.

My husband and I couldn't live in our home for 7 months – because a commercial contractor laid sewer pipelines in our neighborhood … backward. Which means that raw sewage came up through the toilet and bathtub and kitchen sink. In the middle of the night. So when we awoke we were greeted with a stench that was incredibly horrible and squishy carpet. We were able to salvage the appliances and furniture and put those in storage. But the drywall had sucked up every bit of wet ick, as had the insulation. Oh, and the contractor was in our house within an hour, agreeing that it was unlivable.

I had a retirement fund and that's what helped to pay for the rebuild of our home. We had to strip the house down to studs and rebuild, because within days the health department deemed it a hazard and we couldn't live in it.

We rented a bedroom from my mother (she lived in a 2 bedroom condo), and me & him and the dog lived there for 7 months. I was going to school full time, working full time and he was trying to deal with the legal issues that arose. Because the contractor decided that he wasn't really responsible and wasn't going to pay.

We still had a mortgage to pay, in addition to the rent to mom (we insisted, she didn't want to take our money).

There's more, but I think you get the gist of it. Life sucked. But we got through it. How? We focused on what needed to be done.

And when it was over, and two years later we settled with the contractor's insurance company for 25% of the damages done to our home, we vowed to keep looking forward and not let this get us down.

That's one of many stories I can tell about how Life has a way of pulling the rug out from under you.

What I've learned is that complaining accomplishes nothing except …

Showing everyone else how powerless you are.

Blech.

I don't share those stories often because I prefer to focus on today, on what I can do to make things better around me. On what I can do to make our life more Free.

One of those things is blogging. I enjoy sharing how I do things, how I tackle daily living, how I run my business. And, it's allowed me an opportunity to meet terrific people, some of whom are now on my team and others who just like what I write and want to connect with me.

My social media network has increased because of it. Oh, I'd love to connect with you on Google+, Facebook or Twitter. Just send me a request.
